Students of YU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Automotive Mechanical Engineering won the first prize in “College students’ Smart Mobility Startup Camp.”

The contest was held as “2021 Daegu International Future Automobile EXPO” by Korea Academy for Automotive Engineering to seek college talents and support startup through education for core foundation of startup in future automobile area and improvement of entrepreneurship.

The winner of the first prize in the contest is O2B Team consisting of LEE Gang-min and SEONG Rok-san (both 3rd grade) and PARK Seong-ryong (4th grade) of YU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and KIM Young-hun (2nd grade) of Department of Automotive Mechanical Engineering. They got rave reviews by establishing smart power banks using waste lithium-ion cells and by showing the prototype in the event of Daegu International Future Automobile EXPO.

Power bank using pouch type waste lithium-ion batteries may efficiently reuse waste lithium-ion batteries and an application for patent of the technology was made. As it is expected that next-generation mobility market will be reorganized to meet the 2050 carbon neutral policy and the ESG management trend of finished vehicle companies, the idea for smart power bank startups using waste batteries of electric cars gathers more attention.

Manager LEE Kang-min of O2B Team said, “The research student activities in Environment-Friendly Energy System Laboratory of Professor YOU Ki-soo of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering were highly helpful. I’d like to improve my capability in majoring in relation to secondary cells as a faculty research student. I want to enhance my capability in a finished vehicle company or a company related with secondary cells based on my experience to manufacture electric formulae in CMDM of self-manufactured automobile club of the university.”
